Bridger's first halter breaking session
Bridger is a 6 month old colt that was weaned about a week prior to this video. He was raised on a large ranch and had never been touched or worked with before being delivered to his new owner. Prior to this session he had been approached and rubbed on a little but not caught in any way. This session got him driving around the pen, drawing a little, rubbed on with a rope, caught, learning to follow the feel of the rope and finding out that getting his head scratched felt pretty good.

Luke muss im Moment täglich die schmerzhafte Behandlung seines Abszess über sich ergehen lassen. Ich muss den Abszess mit einer Jodlösung 2 X täglich ausspülen. Vor unserem Training war das natürlich nicht so möglich. Er hat sich gewehrt und heftig mit dem Kopf geschlagen, wenn man sich seinem Kopf genähert hat. Verständlicher Weise. Dank eines systematischen Trainingsaufbau erduldet er nun brav die Prozedur, weil es sich für ihn lohnt! Natürlich nehme ich für solche Übungen extrem beliebtes Futter!

Very short I know, but my camera battery died.
I worked with two Halflinger/paint babies in their stalls, taking turns, giving them breaks and at the end we went outside I attached some baling twine on halter so if they got away they were not dragging a long rope.

DPTC feature starts about 10 mins 28 seconds in. You wouldn't believe this was about 3 days of filming including some inside when a massive storm and lightening struck lol This was in about 2006. It was a fun experience if nothing else :-)
It is somewhat cringeworthy at times! Especially loading the ponies lol, we always did it in the best, least stressful way possible working around the ponies in a gentle way, they were pretty amazing considering the people and cameras bless them!
Pleased to say both ponies although not in the same home now (though they were there for many years) are in loving homes and happy!

Miniature Horses Visit Rush
Miniature horses from animal-assisted therapy group Mane in Heaven visited Rush in February. They greeted young patients at Rush Children's Hospital and paid a special visit to staff and patients in Rush's cardiac intensive care unit.

This is Sophie. She had anxiety issues when I got her two years ago, that has been addressed. Now it's time to teach her to be bullet proof for a kid to ride.
I don't use treats because I want to see the real horse in front of me and one that's not influenced by food.
Teaching her to accept the halter, or in this case a rope loop, over the head head on is useful if you have to put something on over a fence.

Murphy arrived in June of 2015 from the New Holland auction in PA. This little guy came as a ‘Jack’ (or ungelded male donkey) and had been used for breeding purposes before ending up at auction. Murphy was gelded in July and recently, we have been teaching him to drive. This video shows his first day wearing a bridle with a bit.

Students relieve stress with the help of mini horses
OXFORD, Ohio (Larry Davis) - At the Seven Oaks Farm in Hamilton, some of the miniature "therapy horses" are being groomed for a road trip.
They will be heading to Oxford to provide stress relief for students at Miami University.
"Red" is the tiniest of the minis. He is just 27 inches tall and weighs only 80 pounds.
"Dallas" and "Denver" are being transformed into unicorns for the day.
The minis are good at what they do, providing therapy for the elderly, children and even college students.
And just as Lisa Moad opens her horse trailer in Oxford, Denver and Dallas begin to draw a crowd.
The mini's drew a crowd, students petted them, they posed for pictures and, of course, took selfies.
By the looks of all the smiles and laughter, there was no doubt the mini's did their job in helping relieve stress from everyone they met on the first week of class.

She is so determined to increase the steady pace of her loyal Shetland pony. Her time is around 60 seconds but the smile will last a long time. This was 1991 or 1992 near Holly Beach Louisiana and was quite the small town event.

And when she came ashore all was devastated, taken down to bare ground, This area was devastated when Hurricane Audrey ranked as the 7th deadliest hurricane to strike the United States (2nd deadliest within Louisiana) in modern record keeping, with at least 500 deaths. The exact number will never be known, as many perished in the storm surge in Cameron and Vermilion parishes, and many missing persons were never found.
Cameron Parish has been rebuilding but it is slow and I don't know if this Rodeo is even held anymore.

Chasing my horses
I was attempting to recorded my playful Arabian horses enjoying the snow. But - one of them had other ideas. The big horse with the green blanket is Crazy(yes- that is his name), the horse in the blue is Bugtussle and the little shit in the red is Avalon. Crazy is a French Arab, Bug is mostly Egyptian and Avalon has is mostly a Polish. Crazy and Bug are bother retired racehorses, Avalon is a work in progress.

Students relieve stress with the help of mini horses
OXFORD, Ohio (Larry Davis) - At the Seven Oaks Farm in Hamilton, some of the miniature "therapy horses" are being groomed for a road trip.
They will be heading to Oxford to provide stress relief for students at Miami University.
"Red" is the tiniest of the minis. He is just 27 inches tall and weighs only 80 pounds.
"Dallas" and "Denver" are being transformed into unicorns for the day.
The minis are good at what they do, providing therapy for the elderly, children and even college students.
And just as Lisa Moad opens her horse trailer in Oxford, Denver and Dallas begin to draw a crowd.
The mini's drew a crowd, students petted them, they posed for pictures and, of course, took selfies.
By the looks of all the smiles and laughter, there was no doubt the mini's did their job in helping relieve stress from everyone they met on the first week of class.

Handling a Mouthy/ Biting Horse
Mouthy horses are quite common, especially young horses, and especially young geldings. How to handle or correct a mouthy horse is one of the most frequent questions that I am asked.
Biting or "mouthy" behavior can stem from a variety of causes. It can be natural playfulness in a youngster, a warning or display of agression, a sign of frustration, or a learned habit for stopping some activity that the horse does not like (such as tightening a girth).
This past week, as I was spending several days on the island of Molokai, Hawaii, I had the opportunity to work with a young horse named Jelly Bean who was a great example of mouthy behavior.
There are numerous different techniques for correcting mouthy horses, but I feel it mostly boils down to this:
Avoid getting bit
Make biting uncomfortable for the horse
Make it clear to the horse that biting won't get him anywhere - no release of pressure, no opportunities to snatch food or play the "tag, you're it" game
Stay calm and don't take it personally

3 Keys to Working with a Young Horse
Young horses can be more or less difficult than an older, trained horse depending on how you look at it, and depending on the quality of the training of the older horse.
What I mean by this is that young horses have fresh minds - for the most part they are unspoiled by bad training, and they probably haven't developed negative associations to people or riding, or picked up bad habits that may be annoying or even dangerous. In this way, young horses can be much easier to work with because you don't have to change as many behaviors, you just need to teach them new ones.
On the other hand, young horses have had less interaction, so they are generally not as good at generalizing and figuring out what you want them to do as an older horse who has had, for example, many riders who all give slightly different cues. The older horse has probably learned what people generally want from him and can better offer the right answers, where a young horse may offer all kinds of different behaviors.
With a young horse, I have found I need to be very clear and specific in what I want them to do, and also not get frustrated if they don't get it. There are a few keys to working with a young horse that I like to keep in mind, and today I thought I would share them with you.

How you approach this delicate task makes the difference between a horse who is happy to be tacked up in the future and one that is not. Presentation is key and knowing how to help a horse through this important lesson is crucial. Essential milestones such as this in a horse’s training leave very little room for error.

* Feel free to ff in the places where we are not in the camera frame. There are a couple of interesting moments so don't miss them. Sometimes surprising things can happen when working with horses, and it is how we react to the surprise that is most important in the horse's mind.
** Like down at Sand Creek in Episode #18, it became necessary to change my focus from the original objective of the day to focus more on Blanco's behavior. In episode # 18 at Sand Creek, Blanco started stomping his front hoof in an angry manner. What i did then was to put the objective of crossing the creek aside and focus instead on his stomping the ground. Since his behavior was one of anger, a behavior that helps no one, i waited for the moment when he stopped stomping and i immediately released that better behavior of not a stomping, which was the correct answer so to speak. i immediately turned him away from the creek and walk a little up the path. When he came back, he was calmer and that is when he actually walked into the creek ahead of me.
So, here in this arena, i am doing the same thing. This time i am focusing on his biting behavior, and conscious of his ever swishing tail. On his back there is no real way to release pressure for biting, that is, when he is not biting. So it becomes tricky trying to "explain" to him what i would like for him to do, which is to stop trying to bite me. The only way to explain to him in this situation is to use "positive reinforcement" rather than the negative reinforcement (release of pressure) i have been using. There are two positive reinforcement acts we can use, one is to hit him and the other is make our displeasure known without hitting. I have chosen to use the hissing sound. He caught me by surprise one time and i spontaneously vocalized to him to knock it off.
*** It has been my experience that there are some horses that when they are young and you are trying to discourage them from biting that "popping" them on the snout or muzzle will stop this behavior. But there are other young horses that when you do this it only stimulates a fighting kind of behavior. Eventually, if people continue to hit them they might finally stop, but in the back of their mind the behavior has not been fully extinguished. The biting (fighting) behavior usually surfaces again when they are under stress for whatever reason. If trailer loading is difficult for them, then they can have a tendency to bite. If the process of saddling and cinching up the girth is difficult for them, then they will bite as a defense, etc.
What i have found with horses that are "fighters" and use biting to defend themselves is that if you change their mind about the perceived stress they are under then the biting has a greater change of extinguishing on its own, in most cases permanently. What has usually happened with a young horse that bites is that they have been "overexposed" to things. That is, new things have been introduced to them in ways they cannot handle the stress. Another way a young horse can develop into a biter is if they are fed treats on a regular bases and have not been taught how to take a treat properly. Blanco has had both of these experiences in his background.
One way to stop the food aggression is to stop giving treats. But the drawback to this is that the horse will always have that food aggression in the back of their mind. So it is my opinion that it is best then to explain to a horse how to ask and take a treat respectfully. i had begun to do this with Blanco when it became evident he was a biter while i was riding him. I knew he was aggressive with treats because i remember being told he bit a young girl that was trying to feed him a treat one day about 6 months ago. But without going into detail here about what i am doing to change his mind about how to ask and take a treat respectfully, i will make a video in the near future on how i have incorporated both positive and negative reinforcement regarding his treats.
So while riding him the key is to have him understand first that i have space and he has space and he cannot come into my space with his mouth. That is the swishing of my hand that i do between his face and my body part he wants to bite. The swishing backed up with the emphatic hissing sound is what establishes the invisible barrier. It is not in this video so much, but in the next video that you will see he is beginning to understand that when i begin to bring my hand up in the swishing motion, making an invisible barrier, he pulls away quicker without coming in closer. Eventually, all i will have to do is the hissing and he will associate this with the barrier.
And finally, as he begins to change his mind about the fact that riding isn't as stressful as he had been lead to learn, the biting will hopefully be permanently extinguished.

Here, we just worked on pressure-release, basic leading, approaching to rub and pet, and accepting a halter even being near her. I didn't want to halter her today, but having it over her nose was a good start. For a young horse and a bunch of kids, it wasn't a bad day!

Francesca is 7 years old. Both she and Molly are new to clicker training.
I had spent about 3, three minute sessions shaping Molly to hold her leg up and wave instead of pawing and had recently begun tapping her behind the elbow to cue the wave. Today, Francesca starting waving her hand and saying, "Molly, say hello!" Now Molly waves back.
We decided to ad a second trick to Molly's repertoire so she would not constantly offer the wave. Francesca tapped her on the neck with a pen and said, "Molly, are you a bad pony?" Molly shook her head, "No." Because Molly is starting to understand what a click means, it only took 3 shakes of the head before Molly figured out that tap with the pen on the wither means "shake head."
Molly is a very fun pony to train because she offers lots of behaviors. Hopefully we'll be teaching her to smile soon as she loves to roll her lip up at the scent of an apple or special treats.

Sorry its a bit long, this a video of Boo doing some very basic tricks, nothing impressive yet haha. We have only been trick training for a matter of weeks and neither of us have done anything like this before ever! Shes a very fast learner, as you might be able too see, very food orientated and eager to please. Lots of mistakes in here, but its only for fun and we are very new to this, have lots more ideas of things I'd like to try and teach her over the next few months. I really enjoy doing this with her as she seems to enjoy it. Would like to perfect her bow, as shes only recently learnt it, then hopefully when she is ready she can learn to lie down on command, and turn her 'paw' into a spanish walk. Trick training is addictive!
Any help and advice is VERY welcome, try and be nice, as I really havent much of a clue about trick training and neither does Boo!

Training my pony to rear!
Today i taught my pony Clippy, to rear! He learnt it really quickly, and hes not being silly about it, like rearing whenever he wants to :D It is scary seing your horse rearing up right infront of you!!
It was absolutly freezing today, so thats why he has a blanket on.
Before you even comment about how stupid this is, i know that it could teach him bad things, but im not that bothered. And yes, maybe i should have worn a hat, but i didnt, and im still here now. So calm down. You can see that he isnt being forved to do this, he is happy and relaxed throughout the video, and not once did i hit him unneccisarily.
If anyone wants to know how to teach this, just comment below and if this video gets a good response i might do a tutorial for this and some other tricks :) x

Trick and Liberty Training with Oreo
This is a little bit of our liberty and trick training session for today. Oreo is turning into such a strong horse, i absolutely love how proudly he carries him self! I just love playing with him, he is so engaging and loves to please, he's a wonder pony :)
