Mini Horse Gets a Shine on at CSU's Veterinary Teaching Hospital

A miniature horse named Shine has a new spring in his step after receiving a rare prosthetic hoof at Colorado State University’s James L. Voss Veterinary Teaching Hospital in April 2016. The little horse underwent amputation surgery to remove a mangled rear hoof; after he recovered, a CSU veterinary team worked with an animal orthopedist to outfit Shine with a special device that allows him to walk – and even trot. Now he can shine on!

Flamingo Land Zoo Shetland Ponies

The Shetland pony is a small, but very adaptable Pony and therefore is a good animal for many different environments, it can make a wonderful riding pony, even for children whom often use the Pony as their first mount.

Far from delicate, the Shetland pony is not only known for being a wonderful pet, but also as a work animal. The Shetland pony is also an excellent show animal and can be seen in many horse shows. The Shetland pony is generally a hearty, healthy fit breed and perhaps this accounts for much of its popularity. It seems to adapt well to new surroundings and has been exported all over the world, doing quite well in many different environments.

Cokey the Fell pony - harness and harrow training

Cokey was sent to us for training as his owners wanted to make sure he was safe and responsive in harness, although he was broken to drive already. Here we show some of the schooling we did, including teaching him to work on chain harrows, getting him used to noise behind him, encountering large vehicles out on the road and going into water, while teaching him to go on a light rein contact in a soft rubber bit.

Shetland Pony Grand National

The Shetland pony is the smallest of the British native breeds with a maximum height of 42" (107cm) and is seen as small as 28" (72cm) or so. It is hardy and resilient being very strong for its size. It has a medium sized head, a rather dished face with a well shaped muzzle and a jaw capable of grazing poor growth over an extensive area.

For these miniature equines there are miniature jockeys to ride them. Infact, all the runners and riders are aged between 10 and 12 years old. The racing is Fast, Furious and Fun!

Shetland Pony Grand Nationals are one of the highlights of many country shows up and down Britain during the summer. They bring a lot of pleasure to the watching public and the young jockeys.

The course is two laps of the show ring and runners and riders have to jump all five fences twice. In the end, 10 year Charles Graves won quite comfortably on his pony “Lancing.” Quite whether Charles will take up professional duties in years to come is unknown, but one thing is for sure, all the punters walked away with a smile on their faces, as none of them lost any money on the horses as betting isn’t allowed!

The James L. Voss Veterinary Teaching Hospital at CSU gave a 3-year-old miniature horse a new lease on life by using a 3-D printer and prosthetics to replace a missing hoof.

Shine was injured after a vicious dog attack left his left hind leg mangled and infected. Veterinarians at the hospital had to amputate the leg in order for Shine to survive.

According to Colorado State University, owners Jacque Corsentino and Lee Vigil told veterinarians to "do whatever it takes" to give the horse another chance at a normal life.

And thanks to Shine's size — he's 30 inches tall and 150 pounds — he was a good candidate for a prosthetic hoof.

Meet Cheerio my new shetland pony

I begged my parents for a pony that could stay at my house. so my dad asked our land lord and he said yes. So i looked for a shetland pony and i saw Cheerio, at the low price of $50.00. My dad bought her and now i have cheerio. Note: my camera is old so the pictures look dark or light depending on the time i took that picture.
